Empty Cereal Boxes

Making Decorating With Empty Cereal Boxes For Your Home

In the past few years, empty cereal boxes have become popular for use in home interior design. From cereal bowls and car seats to a baby's room, empty cereal boxes are commonly used to add a personal touch. But why use them? Many people put empty cereal boxes on the windowsills to give the house a rustic look. Instead of the traditional plastic coat hangers that keep cereal out of the frames of windows, cereal is placed inside the box, which looks just like it did in the store. It's easy to clean. And cereal doesn't fall out like it used to.

Why not use empty cereal boxes as lampshades or end tables? They have the same decorative effect. For a nice transitional piece, use two empty cereal boxes - one to frame a window. Then replace the other with a floor lamp or a small table. Many people use empty cereal boxes as floor pillows or bolster pillows. The ones made for babies and toddlers come in all sizes and colors, so there is something for everyone. Make sure they are firm, though. Otherwise, they'll slide off the couch and off the kid.

You can use empty cereal boxes to make centerpieces. Start by making a board for each box. If the boxes are still good, use flowers and bows on them. But if they're really empty, use plain wood for the base. Using crayons, paint crayons onto the board. If the boxes aren't in tip-top shape, you can sand down the crayon marks and paint over them with flat paint. Use other fillers, such as watercolors or pastels. Add a container of paint, glitter, ribbons, a fondant face, or anything else you wish. Don't overdo it with color - you don't want a painted bowl of candy.

How about placing empty cereal boxes on a table to line it? Allow the edges to overlap on both sides and make the circle tall enough to hold a chair. Use pieces of fabric to dress it up. It can also be used as a wrap for a chair. As a centerpiece, use empty cereal boxes with ribbons for a table runner. You can use white silk for a runner or go for a solid color. Whichever you prefer.

Dried fruits are another way to use empty cereal boxes to give a retro look to a room. Just use a tray for them, and you're ready to create a special "empty cereal boxes" table with lots of dried fruit. Candles, lighting, and candle holders can be added to an empty cereal boxes table, and candles or other fillers add a special touch. You can also use empty cereal boxes to hang flower pots or lampshades.

You can have so much fun playing with empty cereal boxes, but don't think you have to use them strictly for furniture. You can make a little table, a chair, or even a serving tray, just by rearranging some of the frames and cutouts. For most homes, the empty cereal boxes can do wonders. Give them a little personal touch for an even greater effect. And you may find that they add a little whimsy to a tired old plain old room.
